The ‘Friends of Belchamp Walter Church’ was formed in March 2021 to help
conserve, maintain, and improve the fabric, furnishings and fittings of St. Mary the
Virgin Church, Belchamp Walter. To support the upkeep and to foster public interest
in the building and its grounds.
Your support as a FRIEND is vital, as the upkeep of this beautiful church is a
challenging task for a small village such as Belchamp Walter.
The church of St. Mary’s is a Grade 1 listed building of great historic significance. The
oldest part of the church is thought to be from the 10th or 11th century.
The current building dates from the 13th century, with the addition of the tower in
the 15th century. It contains unique medieval wall paintings, which are of national
importance and significance.
A building of this age and stature needs expert and ongoing repairs, maintenance and
improvements.
A recent quinquennial Inspection of the church identified the repairs and
maintenance needed over the next few years. Some are urgent, some desirable
within the next 5 years and others are recommended maintenance and improvement
points. An action plan is in place to address the urgent, maintenance and
recommended points, as well as improvement projects.
